I'm reading a book at the moment called BACK TO THE 80's, it's about a girl in 2011 who suddenly finds herself back in 1987 with her first love and man I wish I'd had that plot idea, Yep I know it's all been done before the whole Back to the Future time travel thing, but it's a subject that I find intruiging...who wouldn't want to nip back to their teenage years and change some of those mistakes we wish we hadn't made??!!
Anyway, my reasoning for wishing I'd thought of my own "Back to the 80's" Plot was how much fun I'd have with the characters...
They'd be wearing jumpsuits, leg warmers and heels and all have big hair back combed within an inch of it's life (and that's just the boys!! I'd have to have a poodle permed rocker in there somewhere!!!) Oh and those hypercolour t-shirts that changed colour when you were hot (whoever thought that was a good idea??!!) There'd be a lovely old fashioned relationship with my main characters, they'd be making mix tapes, going off to the cinema to watch Top Gun. Or having a nice Saturday night in watching Blind Date, Challenge Anneka or a bit of the A-Team.
I love a good soundtrack to write along to, so I'd be able to get some 80's music on the go, bit of Bros, some A-ha and Banarama. Neighbours would be a hot topic of conversation between my female characters who would be obsessing over whether Scott & Charlene would have a happy ending, they'd also have their bedroom walls adorned with Bros, Jason Donovan and Milli Vanilli posters (straight from Smash Hits!)
Or maybe I could go for the glam side of the 8o's Dynasty style: LOADS of shoulder pads, cat fights, affairs and blokes with blue hair (Ah Blake Carrington - LEDGEND!!!). Something like that would be so much fun to write, instead of setting it in the oil rich Denver Colorado, I could set it in any city in the UK with a load of yuppies and a filofax (Oh and a mobile phone the sieze of a suitcase!)
I would LOVE to write a story based in the 80's, it's the decade that just wont go away and is full of so many guilty pleasures...which is another one of may favourite things to write about, guilty pleasures! :O)
